You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You’re on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go
– Oh The Places You’ll Go, Dr. Seuss
Yes, that’s right. I’m starting my blog with a bit of an airy-fairy, head in the clouds Dr. Seuss quote. But sure, why not? It sums up kind of why I’m writing it at all.
Just over a month ago, I packed in my job as a newsreader at a Dublin radio station, having taken up an irresistible offer to come and stay, more or less rent free, in Spain for a few months. I had had a rough few months, nay years, following the heartbreaking death of my beloved Dad from cancer in 2008. His death, which I’m sure I’ll address in a later post, was followed by a period of turbulent affairs of the heart, struggling to cope with holding our family together, and that poncey, middle class, naff urge to ‘find myself’.
I got to a stage a few months ago, after a period of feeling pretty shitty about life in general, where I just felt like I had to go. Just go. Get out of Dublin and go and sit on a beach somewhere. Live on a tenner a day, read books, get a tan, wash away the troubles and the worry and the heartbreak with frequent paddles. I thought about going to North Africa, or to the Andaman Islands maybe. Anywhere but here (there).
Then, My Best Friend Who’s A Boy (as opposed to all those lovely girlies who are good for sitting in, drinking wine and talking about feelings) and also the holder of a large piece of my heart, asked me to come and stay with him in Spain for a while. We’d been through a lot together, and thought we’d like to keep each other company for a while. So here we are. You and me both, kid.
